Barge Tours in
Central France
For
many people, barge touring is the essence of a vacation in Central
France: laid-back and luxurious.
Picture yourself
floating past bucolic meadows and
renaissance palaces. Rates and
accommodations vary,
of course, but in most cases the proportion of
guests to staff is such
that your every need and whim is catered at a five-star level. For ten
couples to be attended to by a staff of eight is not
uncommon.
Barges pictured above
are moored at the harbor near the
old-town center of Briare
and those in the inset photo at right are moored at Auxerre.
There are numerous
locks in the canals of Central
France, as well as in
the rivers other than the Loire. Also there are canal bridges at a few
places, such as Briare
and Le
Guétin, where canals cross over rivers.
During the time that the barge is waiting to traverse the lock or
bridge, the passengers have a good opportunity to get out and stretch
their legs.
